Offshore Energies UK is the leading trade body for the UK’s integrating offshore energies industry. With offices in London and Aberdeen, its membership includes over 400 organisations with an interest in offshore oil, gas, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and wind. From oil and gas operators to CCS licensees, through the supply chain and across the lifecycle from exploration to decommissioning, they safely provide cleaner fuel, power, and products to the UK.

Working with members, OEUK is a driving force supporting the UK in ensuring secure energy supplies while helping meet its net zero ambitions. They inform understanding with facts and data and engage with stakeholders on a range of issues while communicating the value of this industry in a changing energy landscape.

Championing the whole sector, OEUK’s aim is to ensure that the UK continental shelf remains an attractive place to do business, attracting investment which benefits companies and the economy.

OEUK continues to be at the forefront of the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, and works tirelessly to deliver significant value – recent examples include helping secure the North Sea Transition Deal, leading the Covid pandemic industry task force and response, promoting the sector’s role in providing UK security of supply, opposition to the recent windfall tax and the impact of the war in Ukraine on members, the industry and the UK.

Supporting the production of energy in the UK is essential to attract the investment needed to support jobs, continue to make a significant contribution to the economy, meet the UK’s climate goals while avoiding becoming increasingly reliant on imported energy.

The Position

OEUK seek to appoint a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to succeed Deirdre Michie who has advised the Board of her intention to step down in December 2022. OEUK wish to recruit a successor who will build on the considerable progress made by Deirdre and her team over the last eight years and take the organisation forward. Reporting to the Co-Chairs and the wider Board, the CEO can be based in Aberdeen or London, with significant UK travel. Some international travel will also be required.

The position enjoys a broad remit, and the key responsibilities will encompass a wide variety of activities affecting members across the many energy agendas. Critical to success will be working with multiple stakeholders and members around the UK (and beyond) across the entire value and supply chain, with whom relationship management is key. The role will be expected to be a highly credible and high-profile representative, a visible and prominent “voice of the sector”, working effectively with members, stakeholders, regulators and governments.

Offering a mix of strategic and operational responsibilities, the CEO role will focus on leading OEUK, being a champion of the sector and coordinating industry action. The CEO will support members, facilitating groups of members faced with tackling the various agendas impacting them, as well as the wider sector(s), managing relationships and influencing external stakeholders, such as regulators and government agencies, communities, NGOs, and service providers on a range of related issues.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate must have demonstrable and credible knowledge of the oil and gas sector, with core skills and experience in all the relevant areas combined with very well-developed leadership skills. A highly effective communicator, relationship manager, influencer, and networker, with hands on operational capabilities as well as a strategic mindset, candidates must have the ability to operate at a variety of industry levels, up to main Board, and with senior government stakeholders. Outstanding facilitation skills are essential to effectively influence and steer diverse stakeholder groups.

The CEO must have a passion for the offshore energy sector that is authentic, infectious, and inspires people to want to act. A high level of energy and resilience is required to manage multiple stakeholders and to drive projects, programmes, and the many membership agendas and priorities to successful outcomes. Championing, influencing and relationship management, across all parts of the offshore sector value chain and other stakeholders, including at the highest levels of government, call for a high degree of intellect, gravitas, and recognised thought leadership within the sector.

Likely to have career experience embracing a mix of disciplines, giving knowledge, and understanding of, for example, offshore operations, commercial management, health and safety, environment, communications and regulatory affairs, candidates must have established and significant credibility within the oil and gas industry. Exposure to the wider energy arena, energy transition and ESG are also essential key attributes, as well as experience as a very highly effective and proactive communicator through all media channels.
