BP will implement drones and surveillance cameras to continuously monitor methane emissions at every new project. Some existing facilities will also be retrofitted with fixed detection gear as part of a wider initiative by BP to reduce its impact on the environment.
The methane sensor uses technology originally designed by Nasa for its Curiosity rover, which is looking for signs of life on Mars.
