Centrica to almost double Rough storage capacity

Following further engineering work and investment, Centrica is planning to almost double gas storage capacity at Rough, the UK’s largest gas storage facility, it said June 30. This will improve national security of supply.

Some five years after closure (caused by very high rehabilitation costs), it re-opened in October 2022, with some regulatory support in light of the great risk posed by Russia. Its capacity today of about 30bn ft³ will rise to 54bn ft³.

Centrica’s long-term ambition is to turn the Rough gas field (shown below, courtesy of Centrica) into the largest long duration low carbon energy storage facility in the world, capable of storing both natural gas and hydrogen.
