Wanted: North Sea safety champions

9 April 2018

The hunt is underway once again for the men, women and companies going all out for offshore safety.

Nominations have just opened for this year’s Offshore Safety Awards – organised by Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety, with TOTAL as principal sponsor – which celebrate the people and companies doing all they can to make the UK Continental Shelf as safe as possible.

Les Linklater, Executive Director with Step Change in Safety, said: “Building on the success of previous year’s events we are looking forward to this year’s Offshore Safety Awards and hope to attract the same high calibre of entrants that we’ve previously seen, from even more people and workplaces, where their efforts are having a hugely positive impact on the sector.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster and despite continued progress in safety across the sector – since that tragic night – we continue to see incidents and accidents happening across the offshore industry. That’s why the actions and behaviours of our workforce – both offshore and onshore – are key to the prevention of accidents, and I’m looking forward to seeing what ideas and initiatives our award entrants have introduced as part of their dedication to safer working practices.”

Matt Abraham, Health, Safety and Environment Director with Oil & Gas UK, added: “As well as recognising those making a real difference to safety in our industry, the Offshore Safety Awards are a fantastic sharing and learning interactive opportunity. Our audience will be able to engage directly with finalists and learn at first-hand about the steps they are taking to improve North Sea safety. Lessons learned from our event can then be taken back to their own companies by attendees.”

The awards take place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 29 August.  All entries must be submitted by 18 May with finalists being announced at the end of June.

The categories in the Offshore Safety Awards are:

•Safety Leadership – for an inspirational leader who motivates and engages their team to work safely.
•Safety Representative of the Year – for an enthusiastic and committed safety rep that is driving the safety agenda at their worksite.
•Innovation in Safety – for a company which has put in place a clever process or technique to improve safety either across an organisation or at an individual worksite.
•Workforce Engagement – for an individual or team which has actively embraced engagement with its workers on safety matters, showing how a commitment to worker involvement in safety has contributed to an improvement in safety performance.
•Operational Integrity – for an individual or team which has delivered increased efficiency or understanding of risk by putting in place sensible and proportionate risk management solution(s).
•Sharing and Learning – for an individual/team or company that can demonstrate a learning and sharing culture either within their organisation, or who has made a significant contribution to health and safety through active participation in, or engagement with Oil & Gas UK or Step Change in Safety.

About Step Change in Safety (SCiS)

Step Change in Safety is a member-led organisation which has more than 130 oil and gas operators and suppliers as members.

The organisation was founded in 1997 by the trade union associations, in line with Oil & Gas UK (O&G UK) with the strategy to reduce injury rate in the North Sea by up to 50%. Some years later the organisation became independent of O&G UK and delivered the mission to make the UKCS the safest place to work in the worldwide oil and gas industry.

Since then Step Change in Safety has delivered significant and industry changing projects and guidance, including Simplification, Workforce Engagement, Boots on for Safety, Joined-Up Thinking and Major Accident Hazards, which have been adopted by most of its members.

About Oil & Gas UK

Oil & Gas UK is the leading representative organisation for the UK offshore oil and gas industry. Its membership comprises oil and gas producers and contractor companies.
