Aberdeen-based NOV Rig Technologies and engineering firm Lamprell announced April 11 they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support three 1-GW floating wind farms for Cerulean Winds, offshore UK.
NOV plans to use Lamprell in the fabrication, assembly and outfitting required to build tri-floaters it has designed for the three wind farms.
The president of NOV Rig Technologies Joe Rovig said Lamprell’s track record in offshore wind would complement its infrastructure and personnel and NOV looks forward “to making a joint contribution towards decarbonising the UK offshore sector.”
In June 2021, Cerulean applied to develop a floating wind turbine of 3 GW or more at sites West of Shetland and in the Central North Sea. NOV was named as the first of Cerulean’s major delivery partners for fabrication for this proposed 200+ turbine development and will act as the exclusive provider of floating and mooring systems. If approved, the project is anticipated to be commissioned in 2026.
Lamprell said the company’s long history in the oil and gas sector stood it in good stead for its transition into renewables, adding that it looked forward “to supporting NOV in the development of this transformational project for the industry and Scotland.”
