Controls technology company Proserv has agreed to demonstrate its cable monitoring system (CMS) equipment for Norwegian energy company Equinor. It will be used for an 18-month trial period at the Hywind Scotland project. In 2017 it became the world’s first commercial floating offshore wind farm. (See below, image © Equinor.)
Proserv’s CMS will analyse the condition and integrity of export and inter-array cables across the wind farm. Installation and commissioning is set to take place in Q3 of this year and the demonstration will end in April 2024.
Proserv is in a consortium with power system monitoring expert Synaptec, and BPP Cable Solutions. The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC) has also given its support to the group during the development of the solution.
Proserv’s renewables business development manager Paul Cook said that operators need a cohesive operation and maintenance strategy and “as floating wind scales up rapidly, this arrangement on Hywind Scotland represents perfect timing for us to show what ECG can do.”
Earlier this year Proserv made its first commercial sale of its ECG, which will be installed on Equinor and SSE’s bottom-fixed Dogger Bank Wind Farm phases A and B, also in UK waters. Dogger Bank will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm once completed. For more information, please see here.
