This report provides a comprehensive analysis of environmental trends observed in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) for the year 2024, drawing comparisons with previous years and progress since 2018. It highlights the offshore sector’s performance across permitted discharges and emissions including greenhouse gases, produced water, oil, chemicals, and waste as well as unintentional releases.
The report shows significant progress towards North Sea Transition Deal targets, with a 34% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2018 and a 57% drop in methane emissions. Produced water discharges, dispersed oil, and chemical volumes also fell, with most chemicals discharged classed as posing little or no risk. While the number of unintentional oil and chemical releases rose, the total volume released to sea fell sharply.
