Energy major Shell has joined a number of other investors in the Renewables for Subsea Power (RSP) project, according to a February 5 statement by the consortium. RSP is trialling of wave energy and battery storage off the coast of Orkney and has drawn widespread interest owing to its potential to decarbonise energy production activities. Started by Mocean Energy and Verlume, other companies include Baker Hughes, Serica Energy, Harbour Energy, TotalEnergies and the Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC).
The £2mn demonstrator initiative, which is nearing a year in the water, has connected the Blue X wave energy converter – built by Edinburgh company Mocean Energy – with a Halo underwater battery storage system developed by Aberdeen intelligent energy management specialists Verlume.
