Fugro

Fugro combined inspection, monitoring and engineering into a single integrated campaign, with one contractor and project manager overseeing the scope.

Executive Summary

Fugro shares how it combined inspection, structural monitoring and engineering to support the life extension of a long-serving offshore energy platform.

The integrated approach saw a scope planned for 20 operational days completed in just 14, with approximately 30 m³ less fuel used.

Challenge

One of the region’s longest-operating offshore assets required annual subsea inspections and motion sensors on the wellhead caisson (WHC) to monitor structural movement. With asset integrity and life extension a priority, the project called for a retrofit anode solution that could be installed quickly and safely despite restricted access, while combining scopes traditionally delivered through separate campaigns to make better use of vessel time.

Solution

Fugro combined inspection, monitoring and engineering into a single integrated campaign, with one contractor and project manager overseeing the scope. This reduced offshore time, simplified coordination and improved delivery efficiency.

Central to the campaign were two innovations: retrofit anode clamps and DeepData subsea measurement pods.

Developed in-house, the compact, ROV-deployable clamps enable anodes to be installed across a range of subsea structures. Spring-loaded pins maintain a durable electrical connection, while a removable handle provides direct access to the lead screw, reducing snagging risk and simplifying maintenance. Their successful deployment also demonstrated their potential for wider subsea applications.

DeepData subsea measurement pods captured precise relative motion data, enabling in-service performance to be assessed against design expectations. Supported by more than 20 years of offshore monitoring expertise, Fugro’s processing techniques and software provided reliable insights into asset performance.

Results

By integrating the scope into a single campaign, Fugro completed 20 planned operational days in just 14, reducing costs, HSE exposure and fuel use by approximately 30 m³. Using one vessel avoided multiple mobilisations, the clamp’s rapid installation further reduced offshore time.

  • 6 operational days saved
  • Approximately 30 m³ less fuel used

New anodes strengthened the integrity of the platform’s cable stays and support jacks, while structural monitoring provided clear insight into in-service behaviour to support effective risk management.
