Aberdeen-based decommissioning waste specialist Phoenix Decom has found a way to repurpose thousands of tonnes of subsea mattresses from the North Sea for the building industry in the northeast.
Over the last 12 months, Phoenix specialists have reused and recycled some 16,000 tonnes of the concrete materials into aggregate which can be used to lay the foundations of agricultural buildings, roads and transport yards in northeast Scotland. Reuse massively reduces the energy required to crush and recycle the concrete and brings the total to 40,000 tonnes of reused or recycled materials.
In a May 20 statement, Phoenix Decom managing director Craig Smith said reusing mattresses reduces the carbon footprint of projects, delivers huge savings for its clients and benefits local businesses by supporting the region’s circular economy.
