Shelley is the Business Development and Communications Manager at John Lawrie Metals, based in Aberdeen. John Lawrie Metals is the largest metal recycling organisation in north-east Scotland, playing a vital role in supporting the energy sector’s transition through sustainable decommissioning and resource management. Shelley’s journey into the industry is marked by a passion for learning, adaptability, and a commitment to making a positive impact on both people and the planet.

“Don’t be scared of change. The energy sector is going through a period of transformation, so embrace it.”

Growing up in Aberdeen, Shelley was immersed in dance and gymnastics, becoming a qualified gymnastics coach at 17 and moving to London at 18 to study Musical Theatre. After earning a teaching qualification from the Royal Academy of Dance, she returned to Aberdeen, mentored by local teachers who helped shape her early career.

In November 2022, Shelley made a bold career change, joining John Lawrie Metals to assist the operations team with administration. Her curiosity about the metal recycling industry and its role in decommissioning energy assets led her to embrace new challenges and opportunities for growth. Just three years later, she was promoted to Business Development and Communications Manager, a role that allows her to connect with customers across Aberdeen and the north-east, and to contribute to exciting new projects beyond decommissioning.

Among her proudest achievements was assisting in the removal and processing of the old training rig at Weatherford in Bridge of Don, a complex project completed in just nine days, and successfully organising John Lawrie Metals’ return to Offshore Europe, reconnecting with clients and showcasing the company’s capabilities.

Shelley believes that metals recycling is essential to the energy transition, both as a resource provider and a carbon reducer. Handling around 200,000 tonnes of material each year, John Lawrie Metals supports everything from domestic recycling to major decommissioning projects, helping OEUK members achieve their sustainability goals. Shelley is optimistic about the future, inspired by the resilience and shared purpose of those working in the sector: “We all want the same thing: a greener future delivered in a safe way that protects jobs and livelihoods.”

Her advice to anyone considering a career in energy? Embrace change and seize new opportunities. Whether you’re moving from oil and gas to renewables or starting your first job in the sector, don’t be afraid to step into something new.
