The world’s biggest offshore construction vessel, Allseas’ Pioneering Spirit, has delivered the Ninian North field’s production platform jacket to Lerwick Port, Shetland Islands. In an April 22 statement, the port authority said it marked the start of the second phase of the decommissioning work.
The Pioneering Spirit removed the 8,500-metric ton, 83-m tall steel structure in a single left from the field, 160 km north-east of the islands (see image below, courtesy Lerwick Port). It will take Veolia/Peterson about eight months to dismantle and recycle the jacket.
She has gone directly to Lerwick Port Authority’s Dales Voe Base — the first time the she has operated at a quayside in a UK port.
“The size of the jacket and the scale of the support fleet is another demonstration of the harbour’s established capacity to handle large – and even bigger – decommissioning projects,” said the authority’s CEO Captain Calum Grains.
