Dr Rachel Gavey, Co-founder – Commercial Director at sustain:able

About you
What’s the story behind sustain:able’s origins in the energy sector?
Proudly founded by former geoscientists, engineers, and project leaders from the oil and gas industry, sustain:able was created by a team who have lived the complex realities of high-carbon sectors. Our background includes decades of hands-on work across exploration, production and development, meaning we understand the pressures, data systems and regulatory frameworks of oil and gas operations inside out.
But we didn’t want our journey to stop there.
We are now applying this same level of technical depth and data-led support across other essential industries – including energy, water, transport, construction and food – to tackle sustainability challenges in sectors that are equally critical to the net zero transition.
In which other sectors are you now applying your expertise?
The challenges of climate and emissions management don’t stop at oil and gas and neither do we. sustain:able is now working across a range of essential sectors:
- Water & desalination – improve energy efficiency and resilience in water supply systems
- Construction & infrastructure – meet carbon performance targets and sustainable procurement requirements
- Transport & logistics – assess emissions, manage supply chain risk and align with evolving fuel regulations
- Food & agriculture – track Scope 3 impacts and deliver practical decarbonisation across value chains
We apply the same rigorous, data-driven methodology across all sectors to ensure clients make progress that is measurable, transparent and strategically aligned.

About your OEUK membership
How is OEUK membership benefiting your business, whether in terms of networking, resources, or industry insights?
Being part of OEUK has been invaluable in helping us stay closely connected to the evolving needs of the offshore energy industry. As a team with deep oil and gas roots now working across multiple essential sectors, the insights, guidance, and policy updates from OEUK ensure we remain aligned with the latest regulatory and operational expectations.
Membership also gives us the opportunity to engage with like-minded companies who are navigating the same transition – whether through networking events, working groups, or shared learning platforms. It’s a trusted space to exchange ideas, explore partnerships, and stay at the forefront of the UK’s net zero journey.
How are you supporting OEUK members with practical climate solutions?
We’re proud to work with several of the OEUK members to:
- Build credible, auditable GHG inventories
- Develop plans to reduce methane emissions and align with OGMP
- Navigate ESG strategy and compliance frameworks through a practical lens
- Unlock financing through data-led sustainability performance
Whether you’re preparing for ESG reporting or developing an Emissions Reduction Action Plan (ERAP), we bring sector-specific insights and clear outputs that drive business performance.

Future of industry
How does your oil and gas background shape the way you approach sustainability?
Every member of our team made the conscious decision to transition from traditional oil and gas roles into climate and sustainability. We retrained in emissions accounting, ESG frameworks and decarbonisation strategies – from ISO standards and GHG Protocols to ongoing developments in regulation like CSRD, TCFD and IFRS S2.
The result is a bespoke sustainability advisory that combines deep sector knowledge with robust climate capability – delivering ESG strategies that are not just compliant, but commercially practical.
How important is collaboration in supporting your clients’ sustainability goals?
Collaboration is always crucial! Collaboration with our clients and across their teams and also with a carefully selected group of partners.
We work with our partners to ensure we can deliver end-to-end sustainability solutions. One of our key collaborations is with NEMS AS, which combines our ESG and emissions expertise with their leading emissions and environmental reporting software, to streamline compliance and improve performance.
Our wider partnerships enable us to offer end-to-end solutions, from data collection and analysis to strategy implementation and communication, ensuring our clients achieve measurable sustainability outcomes:
- Apollo: Combining sustainability strategies with engineering implementation across oil & gas, hydrogen, carbon capture, and renewables sectors.
- Engage: Delivering ESG improvements for complex projects and supply chains through engineering management and data systems expertise.
- Herdwick Communications: Providing technically backed sustainability communications to ensure clear and credible messaging.
