Neptune Energy ups UK gas output with new Cygnus well

24 August 2022

Privately owned producer Neptune Energy has begun an infill drilling campaign at its operated Cygnus gas field in the southern North Sea, it said August 24.

The well could unlock enough gas to heat an additional 200,000 UK homes this winter. Overall, Cygnus will be able to produce enough gas to heat some 2mn UK households, and with a very low carbon intensity: just 2kg of CO2/barrel of oil equivalent.

Neptune Energy’s UK director Alan Muirhead said: “The 10th well is part of the existing Cygnus field development plan and will support additional supplies of much-needed low carbon gas for UK households from this winter.”

Borr Drilling’s Prospector 1 jack-up rig (left, courtesy Neptune) uses technology that cuts carbon and nitrogen emissions by up to 95% and particulates by more than 85%. Neptune Energy’s partner is Spirit Energy (61.25%).
