The Guidelines on Competency for Wells Personnel provide practical guidance to help companies develop, implement and maintain effective competency management systems for personnel involved in well engineering and operations across the UK. The guidance supports duty holders, well operators, well management companies, service providers and contractors in meeting regulatory requirements and promoting safe, competent well operations.
Updated by the OEUK Wells Forum, Issue 3 reflects current industry practices and places a stronger focus on human factors, non-technical skills, team competency and organisational capability, alongside individual competency assurance.
The guidance covers competency principles, safety-critical roles, competency management systems, assessment and verification processes, and the application of competency throughout the well lifecycle, including drilling, intervention, maintenance and decommissioning. It also provides practical examples, competency profiles and tools to support implementation.
