Wave energy pioneer Mocean Energy has won £3.2mn in EU funding to develop and deploy a 250-kW wave machine in Orkney: Blue Horizon 250.
Made in Scotland, it will be put to work in a grid-connected berth at the European Marine Energy Centre by 2025. The hope is that it will build up to a small farm delivering 2 MW of low carbon power by 2030, Mocean said September 5 in a statement.
Mocean Energy said the programme would allow it to build a significantly larger machine based on its proven hinged raft design (see below, courtesy Mocean), incorporating its novel, direct-drive generator.
