OEUK responds to Liberal Democrat manifesto

10 June 2024

The leading trade body Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) today responds to the launch of the Liberal Democrats’ 2024 General Election manifesto.

OEUK is an apolitical organisation that represents over 400 members across the UK’s energy mix, from oil and gas to wind, hydrogen and carbon capture technologies.

OEUK’s own industry manifesto is calling for all parties to choose a homegrown energy transition that safeguards jobs, boosts energy security and drives economic growth.

Jenny Stanning, External Relations Director, Offshore Energies UK says:

“The Liberal Democrats’ manifesto contains significant proposals for the nation’s economy and energy future. It’s good to see the focus on the skilled people at the heart of our industry and how we can ensure they have a bright future. It’s essential that as we journey to net zero we leave no one behind.

“We agree that stability, certainty and confidence are vital for economic growth and investment. We believe a successful energy transition has the potential to deliver the economic growth the UK needs. The best way to do this is with a homegrown energy transition that makes the most of our supply chains and our workforce. To get this kind of investment and growth we need a globally competitive investment environment.

“We would welcome further conversation with the Liberal Democrat team to share industry insights into the current challenges to securing investment in offshore energy in the UK, and explain why their approach to taxing the energy industry could further deter this investment.

“If we get this right, the UK can unlock over £200bn of private investment to deliver the technologies needed to deliver net zero through new technology and renewable energy.”
