Party manifestos should champion a homegrown energy transition says Offshore Energies UK

10 June 2024

With more than 200,000 jobs, energy security and the race to net zero at stake in this year’s General Election, Offshore Energies UK is urging politicians of all parties to support the principles laid out in the OEUK manifesto.

In the right economic, fiscal and political conditions, the manifesto says £200 billion of new private capital for offshore energy projects can be delivered by 2030 across the UK’s energy mix including wind, hydrogen and carbon capture as well as maintaining domestic oil and gas supplies.

OEUK represents more than 400 companies of all sizes producing oil, gas, wind and hydrogen energy, as well as carbon capture technologies and the energy supply chain.

With supportive government policy the OEUK manifesto shows the offshore energy industry can:

  • Create a homegrown energy transition that leaves no-one behind
  • Sustain existing jobs while growing the skilled workforce of the future
  • Deliver £200 billion of private investment over the next decade, spurring economic growth and technological innovation
  • Provide half of the UK’s energy needs by 2030 in an uncertain world
  • Meet the UK’s net-zero commitment before 2050

OEUK CEO David Whitehouse says:

“We expect economic growth, jobs and energy to be at the heart of all the major parties’ plans when their manifestos appear next week.

But policymakers must take people and communities with them. We need to ensure we build an energy future that leaves no one behind.

We are asking politicians to back the UK offshore energy sector and its people.  With the right support, this industry can deliver a homegrown energy transition that unleashes our potential and powers the UK’s future.”
