Engineering firm Petrofac has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dutch Seawind Ocean Technology covering the marketing of the latter’s patented floating offshore wind energy system. Seawind’s first 6.2-MW floating offshore wind turbine demonstrator is due for deployment in European waters in two years’ time.
Petrofac will help with design verification before offering project management/engineering, procurement and construction services of its technology.
Seawind has developed proprietary two-bladed floating wind turbines anchored in a unique concrete floating structure that is suitable even for cyclonic regions and ultra-deep waters (pictured below, courtesy Seawind).
Petrofac’s COO of New Energy Services John Pearson said: “The recent ScotWind offshore wind leasing announcement signals major commitment towards achieving the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.” He said that more than half the awards were granted for floating wind projects.
