Spirit Energy has contracted Shearwater GeoServices to survey 500 km² of its Morecambe Bay gas fields, it said March 12. It plans to convert them into operational CO2 storage sites at scale by 2030.
The survey fulfils a requirement of the company’s new carbon storage licence with the provision of high resolution data. The results will support all subsequent models and mapping for carbon capture and storage initiatives, it said.
Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) could be one of the largest carbon stores in the UK and Europe. As well as contributing to national goals regarding net zero emissions, MNZ offers a vast, multi-billion-pound regeneration opportunity for northwest England, said Spirit, a majority-owned subsidiary of energy company Centrica.
