Subsea monitoring: embracing digital transformation
A game-changing collaboration is harnessing the power of digital technology to create new efficiencies, enhance accuracy and reduce safety risks.
The Challenge
Maximising the potential of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) in subsea infrastructure monitoring.
The industry has traditionally used conventional techniques for the monitoring, inspection and surveying of subsea infrastructure, given the practical and economic issues associated with deploying digital technologies in often hostile environments.
Is it possible to find a way of automating, optimising and digitising the process to deliver significant benefits for the industry?
The Response
Technology leaders Leidos formed a strategic partnership with life of field experts i-Tech 7 with the aim of meeting the key objectives:
· create new efficiencies
· enhance accuracy
· reduce safety risks
The complexity and mission critical nature of this project was extensive and far reaching. To achieve the best possible result, Leidos and i-Tech 7 teams worked collaboratively to bring combined subject matter expertise to design and build an effective subsea monitoring solution.
These teams of experts worked together to find a solution that would not only meet the key objectives, but exceed them, for example unlocking the full value of data going back decades.
The introduction of technologies such as machine vision, AI and neural networks dramatically improved the repetitive aspects of pipeline survey and inspection work, processing vast quantities of data quickly and cost-effectively.
Automated processes, underpinned by human expertise, allowed the teams to significantly enhance data analysis and support better and swifter decision-making, streamlining many of the traditional manual processes.
The digitalisation partnership with i-Tech 7 draws from experience and techniques in other sectors in which Leidos operates, such as defence, aerospace and logistics.
The Result: A huge Success
· Automated, optimised and digitised key business processes
· Significantly lowered operating costs, introduced efficiencies, while reducing risk and improving quality and safety
and in doing so
· Is enabling the partnership to differentiate itself from its competitors and provide significant benefits for the industry
Collaborative leadership has underpinned the success of this project. Working in partnership to leverage i-Tech 7’s expertise enabled the digitalisation of previously manual processes to directly impact safety, efficiency and sustainability.
The deployment of AI capabilities is improving accuracy and drastically reducing the timeline between data collection, analysis and response, with up to 75% of the process now automated.
And, it is realising the latent potential of data collected by i-Tech 7 over several decades, providing customers with new insights on their subsea assets.
Wider collaboration benefits include driving health, safety and sustainability gains – for example, using better asset integrity data to minimise risks to the environment and reducing the carbon footprint due to less time required of vessels at sea.
